Off the Beach Activities On Stradbroke Island
While it's renowned for its pristine waters and soft white sands, the beaches of North Stradbroke Island are just one of its unique features. This diverse island is home to lakes and lagoons, an array of wildlife, quaint villages and some of the friendliest locals around. While it may be tempting to spend your days swimming, surfing or lying under a beach umbrella with a great book, don't miss the opportunity to discover some of Straddie's other amazing experiences. There are always plenty of things to do on Straddie.
Join an Eco Tour of the Wetlands
You may not have ever considered bird watching high on your to-do list, but take an eco tour of Straddie's lake and wetlands, and you may see everything in a whole new light. An eco tour will introduce you not just to birds, but to a vast number of wildlife species, and the unique flora that makes up this protected region. Discover just why it's been internationally recognised as one of the most important wetlands areas in the world. You might also enjoy a bushwalking or 4WD tour of the area.
Discover the History
Just a few years ago, The North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum at Dunwich was named the best small museum in the country. Pay a visit to discover some of the fascinating local history, from both an Indigenous and European perspective. There's also a sign-posted walking tour around Dunwich, which points out locations of historical significance.
Stradbroke Island has rich Aboriginal heritage, which is well worth exploring. There are several tour options, which will introduce you to the history and culture. You might view a cultural dance performance, visit a gallery to learn all about painting, head inland on a bush tucker tour, or even learn how to paint and throw a boomerang (it's not as easy as it looks!). Indigenous tours and performances are a great option for kids and adults alike.
Food and Drink
Take time out with your tummy and enjoy a meal or drink at any number of great waterside locations. There are takeaways, casual cafes and even a few fine-dining options. Try the bayside Little Ship Club at Dunwich, Seashells Café/Bar at Amity or Stradbroke Island Hotel at Point Lookout with a bistro, restaurant and a great bar with stunning ocean views. Lunch or dinner by the water is a Straddie must-do!
Indulge with a Massage
Stradbroke Hotel also has a spa onsite, so if you're looking for some holiday luxury, why not book in for a massage. Soothe those aching muscles and unwind.
It may not be known as a shopper's paradise, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few places you can hit for retail therapy. There are galleries dotted across the island, as well as fashion, gift and homewares stores at Point Lookout. One great option is the Sunday markets, also at Point Lookout. It runs weekly during the peak season, and less frequently in the cooler months, however the local shops will display notices so you know just when to visit. Fossick through a range of stalls to discover local arts and crafts and fresh food produce.
